Summerween

Halloween is our strongest defence against the cancerous Christmas and its creeping attempt to devour the year, so when Christmas in July became a thing, it was inevitable that summerween would have to arise.

As we prepare to enter the most miserablely hot and unpleasant part of the year, lets take a day to appreciate all the spooky and creepy things around and within us. Throw on a playlist about skeletons, eat a sweet treat, contemplate Saculina barnacles while listening to Parasite Rex by Carl Zimmer.

Look at this beautiful toe biter, isn't she magnificent? It's important to appreciate the little horrors that summer brings us and not just pine for Fall.

Adult Eastern lubber grasshoppers are actually too beautiful for your computer or phone screen to depict. Their wings are a gloriously intense salmon color that simply does not exist in pixel or printed form. You have to see them in real life to properly appreciate these giants.

Check out this cutie~

With so many bugs about, the geckos can afford to be choosy and eat their favorites. This means more ants for the rest of us.

While spiders are important friends, these particular ones are getting to be pests around the workshop. I took some time to catch a handful of these little buddies to relocate outside before other sculptor ends up killing them.

So, with so many little guys scurrying around, how can summer be all bad?

Good luck out there! The heat won't last forever, but try to look on the dark and creepy side while it's here~
