Often mistakenly referred to as 'flying dinosaurs', pterosaurs share a close common ancestor with the dinosaurs but are a separate group. The first vertebrates to develop powered flight, pterosaurs ruled the skies until the Cretaceous extinction event wiped them out along with their dinosaur cousins.
